ABOUT THE SILVER WAND

The Silver Wand

A “magical” device that provides total control of bacteria. Simply immerse the Silverwand in the spa or hot-tub once a week for 20 to 30 minutes.

Once the water has been treated with the wand
, Silver ions circulate freely to eliminate all the known pathogens that occur in  spa and hot tub water. Silver, in it's simplest form, has been used as a means of water sanitation for thousands of years. Roman water vessels were made of silver, silver was employed as cutlery for sanitation purposes, soldiers' wounds were kept free of bacteria by silver and more recently the 1960 NASA space program employed silver as the means of drinking water purification for the astronauts as did the Russian space program. Before the discovery of antibiotics, silver was the primary medical means of sanitising wounds and medical equipment. Silver destroys pathogenic bacteria on an electro-physical level. Silver in Colloidal/Ionic form is a recognised antibacterial/healing agent. Silver  has never gone out of use as a medical dressing for burn victims.

Dr. Robert Becker, nominated twice for the Nobel Prize, has a very interesting chapter about the remarkable healing properties of silver in his book, The Body Electric. The chapter is titled ‘The Silver Wand’ and describes in detail how silver healing/antimicrobial treatment is used effectively where all other methods had failed.  As a nod to Dr. Becker's seminal works we have named our device 'The Silver Wand'.

A public swimming pool in Belgium has successfully been using a Copper and Silver ionizer as their sanitizer for 40 years (we highly recommend the following 5 min Youtube link showing that pool and ionizer system in operation)     https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8dmvJuSKb_Q

How this device works

Using low voltage DC electricity, through a propriety control microprocessor, DC current is applied to

an anode of Silver/Copper and a cathode of stainless steel. When this is done in a medium such as water, the

water is ‘positively charged’ with Cu (Copper) and Ag (Silver) ions. These positively charged ions remain

in the water indefinitely, their positive charge repelling one another and evenly distributing themselves

throughout the body of water in what is termed ”Brownian Motion” until they come into contact with

pathogenic bacteria. Then they form electrostatic compounds with the negatively charged cell walls of  pathogens, such as faecal coliforms, E. coli, and staphylococcus. The resulting action destroys the ability of these pathogens to reproduce.

The video shows how easy it is to use the device. It needs to be

immersed in the spa water for approximately 20 minutes once a week. The

battery charge is good for at least 4 sessions before recharging from a USB

port and the battery itself can be expected to last for approximately 500 cycles.

A personal experience:

My name is Peter Brooking and the greater part of my working life has been involved in the construction, design and maintenance of swimming pools and spa pools. My wife Karen, and I started the company Spa International New Zealand Limited, where together we designed and manufactured the "Plugin Spa". Throughout my years in the pool and spa industry (I'm 64 at this time of writing) I was never comfortable with the use of chlorine. We were aware that a considerable number of people cannot physically tolerate chlorine. Skin rashes and respiratory illness were frequent consequences of chlorine use.

As a sanitizer, chlorine is very effective; however, it immediately begins oxidizing ALL organic material that it comes into contact with, including skin, eyes, and delicate mucous membranes. Our skin, as a dermal layer, is quite permeable, enough so that various medical applications such as hormone treatments, may be applied directly to the skin in the confident expectation that the treatments will quickly enter the body. Therefore a measurable amount of chlorine will inexorably enter the body of people bathing in chlorinated water.

In the process of breaking down organic materials, chlorine creates trihalomethane (THMs) which are known carcinogens.  Additionally, chlorine is considered IDLH (Immediately Dangerous to Life and Health) at 10 ppm (parts per million) and toxic by the United States NICS (National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health) at exposure levels of 5 ppm over 15 minutes. Please bear in mind the public pool standard for chlorine is between 1 ppm and 3 ppm. So a fine line exists between safe and toxic levels. My wife’s natural aversion to chlorine and the chlorine vapours coming off our spa pool’s hot water finally caused her to stop using our spa and the swimming pool altogether.

For years we searched for a practical alternative sanitiser and tried many different things. We experimented with ozone which had some value as a sanitiser but because it had no residual qualities, in other words, unless the air bubbles containing ozone came into immediate contact with bacteria, the ozone would bubble to the water’s surface and leave the water with no residual ozone remaining to combat any remaining bacteria, effectively only reducing the need for chlorine by about 5%.

Salt Chlorination is not a departure from chlorine as it is simply the production of sodium hypochlorite (essentially, liquid chlorine).

The main chlorine alternative Bromine, also a halogen, is not dissimilar to chlorine in terms of its carcinogenic production of trihalomethane and dangerous levels of toxicity.

Having the pool and spa company throughout the 80s, 90s and early 2000’s provided us with adequate opportunity to test a variety of chlorine alternatives, both on a personal and commercial scale.
In 2010 we found water purification with a copper and silver ionizer to be a beautiful, practical solution.
Initially, we purchased a copper/silver ionizer from Germany and verified it to be working okay, that is, we found it to produce sufficient levels of copper and silver ions for effective water sanitation. Then we analysed other units from around the world with some utilising novel and proprietary electronic control systems but found them to be all very expensive and limited in the range of use.

Applying some practical experience, we designed a unit that addressed the various shortcomings. Tailoring the unit specifically for spa pools enabled us to lower the copper component and increase the silver content. We have made our unit available at a price considerably less than any others, achieving this by marketing direct (with no middleman adding unnecessary commission) and by holding very little stock (we make to order). From the time of order to delivery, the waiting time is currently between 2 to 3 weeks.
Silver/copper water purification is so simple it receives very little promotion from the massive pool chemical industry, more often its promotion is actively suppressed. Pool and spa shop retailers usually rely heavily on their after-sales of swimming pool chemicals. If you have owned a spa or swimming pool, you will know these chemical offerings to be many, numerous, and expensive. “Bring in your water sample,” they say, and you will leave the shop loaded with an array of chemicals. Each chemical is genuinely necessary to re-establish balance on the water Langelier Saturation Index, a balance which is constantly being upset due to the daily introduction of chlorine.

Understanding the difference between Chlorine and Silver sanitation.

It is useful to understand the practical differences in how chlorine and silver sanitize water. Chlorine burns up, or oxidises, all organic matter, that is to say, it oxidizes bacteria, fine dust, and body oils in the water, but chlorine also immediately begins to oxidize skin, hair, delicate tissue of eyes, and sensitive mucous membranes and there is a very fine line between "safe" levels and levels that are known to be toxic.

Whereas Silver/copper will destroy all known pathogenic bacteria including viruses and fungi with zero oxidising effect on organic matter including the human organism, all the while being within the range of water considered safe enough to drink.

The downside to Silver/copper, if it may be considered as such, is that silver and copper have zero oxidising effect on dust and body oils which means that you become more reliant on your filtering system to capture dust, dirt, and the body oils that are a natural consequence of perspiration when using a spa. Therefore a regular weekly filter backwash is needed, which is good pool maintenance in any event.

If your filter is not completely removing organic matter (fine dust and body oils), chlorine may still be used occasionally. In a spa with regular daily use once every 10 days a teaspoon of chlorine may be used to clarify the water without interfering with your silver regime. For individuals sensitive to chlorine it is advisable to wait a day or two, until no chlorine is detectable, before using the pool

A verification involving sewage water:

This brings me to the point where I would like to relate the experience which absolutely confirmed me in the efficacy of copper/silver as a means of water purification.

By 2014 we had been using copper/silver to good effect on our swimming pool and hot water spa pool when we
received a request o view a large holding tank which was the final stage for a somewhat primitive sewage treatment system. The local council was demanding the system owner reduce the pathogenic bacteria count in this tank.  The owner had requested that I tender a price for an automatic chlorination treatment in this tank.
This was the ideal opportunity for me to test the efficacy of the Silver Wand in an extreme environment.

I visited the site, armed with rubber gloves, a bucket and rope, two separate (approved) water sample bottles and the Silver Wand. I lowered the bucket into the foul-smelling tank, wishing I had brought breathing apparatus. After filling one sample bottle and before filling the second, I treated the putrid water in the bucket with the Silver Wand for approximately five minutes.
The water did not change colour (it was almost black). I bottled and bubble wrapped the treated and untreated samples and sent them, by courier, to the New Zealand Lower Hutt Seaview branch of Eurofins Environmental Laboratory Services. ELS is a worldwide recognized lab for a range of testing procedures, one of which is food-grade bacteria tests.

ELS received the two samples on the 28/01/2014 and emailed us the results on 31/01/2014 Report Number: 14/2587

The result is as follows:

The untreated water sample had a faecal coliform count of 188,000 CFU/100ml and an E. coli count of 190,000 CFU/100ml. Yes, that is putrid and very dangerous water.
The water sample that had been treated for five minutes with the Silver Wand had a fecal coliform count and an E. coli count of less than 4 CFU/100ml.  Just outside potable (drinking) water standard for these particular pathogens (the actual count may well have been lower as we had requested an environmental water test which measured no lower than the count of 4cfu per 100ml). In retrospect, we could have submitted it as a drinking/potable water sample.
These tests are expensive and I did not resubmit a sample for potable water testing because the test result provided overwhelming and sufficient evidence of the efficacy of silver. I would have been impressed had the Silver Wand only halved the massive pathogenic bacterial content of the sewage water, as these toxic levels were unlikely to ever be experienced in a spa or swimming pool environment.

We have since sent in a number of samples of Silver Wand treated spa water for pathogenic bacterial analysis to consistently excellent results.

     Is Silver Safe?
The effective silver production level required by the Wand in spa water is 0.03 mg/l. Well within the World Health Organisation safety standards for silver in drinking water.

"I developed an allergy to chlorine and thought I would have to give up the use of my spa pool..."

Several years ago I developed an allergy to chlorine and thought I would have to give up the use of my spa pool. However thanks to Peter's ionizer I have been able to continue to use it daily. The ionizer is a simple device to use, it keeps the water clear and clean and there is no unpleasant chemical smell. I strongly recommend this over the use of chemicals.

"No more chemicals..."

We have had a spa pool ionizer, made by Peter Brooking, for several years now.

No more chemicals, we just plug in our ionizer every Wednesday and hose down the filter. Easy. The spa pool water becomes crystal clear and is almost drinkable! No more chlorine or bromine smells on our skin.

Fantastic! Highly recommended.

"We are really happy..."

We have been using the Copper system provided by Peter Brooking in our spa for over 10 months.
We enjoy the spa more without the chlorine smell wafting around & definitely prefer that when getting out we no longer stink of chlorine.

Our spa is running well with this system & our water always looks fresh and clear. We are really happy with the change we have made.

Thank you

Silver Wand has been the answer to our enjoyment of our spa.

We had given up using our spa because of the number of chemicals we were being advised to use (to ‘balance’ the ph and chemical levels) and the increasing skin itchiness that they were causing.

We saw an ad. for the Silver Wand in the Kāpiti news and asked Peter to make one for us. It’s so easy to use and there are no chemical smells and complicated water tests required.

The water is clean and clear and we have no negative side effects, and we now feel much more in control of our spa cleaning process.

We thoroughly recommend this system to any prospective spa user.

Thank you, Peter,

Val and Bernie, Paekākāriki.

I bought a silver wand when I got my new spa pool in May 2019.  I’ve never looked back.  I don’t need any chemicals and my spa stays clean and fresh, with very little maintenance.  All I do is use the silver wand and wipe my spa walls down once a week while running the pump.  I clean the filters weekly too and the pool just keeps looking and smelling clean. Peter has also been incredibly helpful with any maintenance of the silver wand (very little required). It is such a joy to sit in a clean and fresh smelling spa pool, with no nasty chemicals and minimal maintenance effort. I really wouldn’t use anything else.
